What SBMM is

Skill is one factor. Not the only one.

Skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) means the game estimates your recent performance and tries to match you with players near that level. In Call of Duty it works together with connection quality, how long you've been searching and the size of your party.

Connection usually comes first. The game wants a playable match, so it builds your lobby from players who reach the same data centre with good ping, and skill matching works inside that pool. That's why the pool itself, meaning the region and the hour, has such a big effect on how a Modern Warfare 4 match feels.

No SBMM, explained

You can't switch it off. You can change the pool.

There's no setting, VPN or tool that disables SBMM. "No SBMM" lobbies usually come from one of three things.

Looser playlists

Some seasons test playlists with relaxed skill matching. Check the in-game descriptions, since they change.

Quieter hours

Off-peak local times draw a different crowd. The Sweat-O-Meter shows each region's local time at a glance.

Different regions

Routing through another region changes the pool you match into. Versus shows the ping cost before you commit.

Does MW4 have SBMM?

Yes. Call of Duty has used skill-based matchmaking in its recent releases, weighed alongside connection quality and queue time, and Modern Warfare 4's core playlists work the same way.

Is there a no-SBMM playlist in MW4?

Recent Call of Duty games have tested playlists with looser skill matching, and Ranked Play uses visible skill divisions instead. Check the in-game playlist descriptions each season, because they change.

Can a VPN turn off SBMM in MW4?

No. The game runs its own matchmaking. A VPN changes which region's pool you queue in, and so who is online with you, but SBMM still applies.
