Versus Remap Windows Guide: USB Pad, Apply a Slot, Add One Shift Layer
First-session Versus Remap on Windows: USB DualSense or Xbox pad, pick virtual output, Save & apply to a quick slot, then add one hold-or-toggle shift layer.

Direct answer: Versus Remap is the Versus controller remapper for Windows 10 and 11. Connect a DualSense or Xbox One / Series pad over USB, sign in, confirm Input test → Physical sees your presses, choose the virtual output your game expects, make one clear mapping, then Save & apply to one of four quick slots. Check Input test → Virtual before you trust the game. When you want a second action on the same pad, add one alternate (shift) layer — hold or toggle — and leave the rest unset so Main still carries those buttons.
Most remappers fail the first session for a boring reason: you saved a profile and never applied it to a slot the mapping service is actually running.
This is the day-one path: prove the pad → pick the identity the game wants → apply a slot → optionally layer one alternate set. It is not an Edge paddle deep dive and not a stream-overlay setup. Those are adjacent guides.
What this guide is for (and what it skips)
Remap’s job on day one:
- Hear the physical pad — USB DualSense or Xbox One / Series, plus keyboard and mouse when you need them as mapping sources.
- Speak the virtual identity — Xbox / DualShock 4 / generic output so the title sees what it expects.
- Commit the profile — Save & apply to a quick slot, then verify Virtual input test.
- Add one layer — Main plus three alternates; unset buttons inherit Main.
What this post does not do:
- Claim Xbox Elite back paddles, virtual Switch Pro, or Bluetooth rumble (not in this build).
- Re-teach DualSense Edge paddles (separate Edge Remap guide).
- Walk OBS stream overlay or long macros end-to-end (short pointers at the end).
- Promise online checkout works today (purchases are not enabled yet on the product FAQ).
Windows. Remap plan for the remapper; Mate, Aim, Clipper, Audio, and Boost stay free apps on their own pages.
Step 1: Plug in USB, sign in, prove Physical input
Start with the controller connected by USB and visible to Windows. Remap needs both a physical input and a virtual output: the pad in your hands supplies the actions; the virtual controller sends the mapped result to the game.
- Open Remap and sign in to your Versus account. Complete sign-in or plan checks if the account screen asks.
- Select the connected controller.
- Open Input test in Physical mode and press face buttons, bumpers, triggers, and both sticks.
If Physical is dead, fix the cable and Windows device connection first. Do not start rewriting mappings until Physical lights up.
Step 2: Choose the virtual output your game expects
Open Settings → Virtual output and pick the identity the title wants — independently of which pad you hold.
Docs call out:
- PlayStation 4 — DS4 output
- Xbox 360 — XInput output
- Generic pad — DirectInput-compatible output
The product page frames the same idea: titles that want Xbox or DualShock 4 see the virtual pad; generic is also available.
Xbox-native games usually want the XInput path. DualSense-in-hand into Xbox-out is a common Remap job — and it still follows this same first-session flow.
Change one thing at a time. Wrong output with a perfect map still looks like “Remap is broken.”
Step 3: Map one control, then Save & apply to a quick slot
Open Mappings, choose Gamepad (or Keyboard / Mouse if that is your source), and edit one control you can feel immediately — a face button, bumper, or simple key assignment.
- Confirm Physical input.
- Choose the action under Virtual output.
- Save mapping.
- Pick one of the four quick slots.
- Hit Save & apply and wait for Applied to Slot with that slot number.
Saving stores edits. Save & apply is what assigns the profile to the selected slot and asks the mapping service to use it. A saved file alone is not confirmation the mapping is running.
Then open Input test → Virtual and press the same control. If Virtual shows the mapped result, the service has your profile. If Physical works and Virtual does not, stay on apply / service errors before blaming the game.
Sticks and triggers keep analog behavior; tune deadzones, sensitivity, and curves under Dashboard → Tune one change at a time after the basic map works.
Step 4: Add one alternate (shift) layer
Main is your normal layout. Alternate 1 / 2 / 3 (product language: shift layers on top of Main) let selected buttons do something else without rebuilding the whole profile.
- Select the alternate set you want to edit.
- Choose activation — a pad button or analog trigger that arms that set (Help-first path; do not use a keyboard key or mouse button as the layer jump).
- Pick While held or Toggle on/off.
- Change only the buttons that need a second action. Leave the rest empty so they inherit Main.
- Save & apply, then test activation and the remapped buttons together.
Held activation returns to Main when you release. Toggle stays until you press again. Reset that alternate set if you want a clean rebuild.
Example shape (not a claim about any title’s meta): Main keeps your fire and move; hold a bumper to temporarily expose volume / utility keys on face buttons you left empty on the layer. You only authored what changes.
Optional next (keep day one short)
When the slot applies cleanly:
- Macros — ordered virtual presses and waits; up to 12 macros per profile, 32 steps each. Fixed sequences, not “reads the game.” Check competition rules before you automate anything.
- Game setups — product Game Center / Steam and Epic detection can load a saved profile when a title launches while Remap is open; you can restore the previous profile when the game closes.
- Stream overlay — Remap includes a DualSense, Xbox, or controls-only overlay for OBS / Streamlabs Browser Source (800 × 480) or the Add to OBS helper. Choose Before mapping or Virtual controller output. Keep the private local URL off public posts. Full overlay walkthrough is its own post.
Export a JSON backup before big experiments. Import reviews a shared profile before you apply it.
FAQ
Will Remap work with my Xbox or DualSense on PC?
The current build targets Windows 10 and 11. It supports DualSense and Xbox One / Series controllers over USB, plus keyboard and mouse mapping. Support varies by feature: Xbox Elite back paddles, virtual Switch Pro output, and Bluetooth rumble are not in this build.
I saved a profile. Why did nothing change in game?
Saving stores edits. Select the correct device and one of four quick slots, then Save & apply. Confirm Applied to Slot, then check Input test → Virtual. If Virtual is correct but the game is not, review the game’s controller selection and Remap’s virtual output. For the Save vs Apply distinction in plain language, see Saved your profile? Make sure it is applied.
Can one button do two jobs in the same profile?
Yes. Alternate / shift layers give buttons a second assignment without replacing Main. Leave layer buttons empty to inherit Main. Arm the layer with a pad button or trigger (hold or toggle), then Save & apply and test both states.
Is Remap free like Mate or Clipper?
Remap and VPN have separate plans. Mate, Aim, Clipper, Audio, and Boost are free apps. Remap plan seats (Solo / Duo / Trio / Squad) are per-machine allowances for Remap; a Remap plan does not include the other Versus software. Online purchases are not enabled yet — compare allowances on Pricing and check Billing in your account if you already have a plan.
Where do I go if Physical works but the game ignores the pad?
Work the checklist: Physical test → correct profile and slot → Save & apply without errors → Virtual test → game controller picker and virtual output. If inputs appear twice, check whether another remapper is also running.
Soft next step
Run that path once on your USB pad: Physical proof, virtual output, Save & apply to a slot, Virtual proof, then one alternate layer if you need it.
